How to Literately Roleplay

Now before I get to the basics, let’s start off with some common questions you may ask. “What is Literate Roleplaying?” “How do I do it?” “What should I NOT do?”

Literate Roleplaying is when you roleplay long and detailed. Some people might think of Literate Roleplaying as when you roleplay literately and like it’s real life. If you were roleplaying, you would like something to roleplay off of, right? Think about roleplaying the other way. If you were the other person, would you enjoy roleplaying off of that post? Instead of just typing, “I smiled and nodded.” Say “I smiled and nodded, looking up at her and saying, ‘How do you do?’, my blue eyes shining in the dim morning sun.” See, if you roleplay like that, people answer a question and gets the roleplay started. If you just stand there, doing nothing, it tends to lose peoples interest. What a common reply to the non literate roleplaying is normally something boring and most likely this: “I smiled back.” See, not very good, right?

Now how you Literate roleplay is easy. Instead of making short, rushed posts, make long, detailed posts! If you’re in a rush and want to make a quick post, please don’t! Say “OOC: Sorry, I have to go!” Instead of making a short, boring post, take your time and make a long one! To make a literate post, you add details where it should be needed. Remember the five senses! Write what you hear, taste, feel, and smell in that scenario. If you were in a kitchen, would you post “I smelled the cookies from the kitchen.” Or would you post, “I took in a breath of air as I sat in the living room, smelling the warm sugar cookies coming from the kitchen.” What also helps is when you take out stuff and replace them with juicy words. Instead of using, yummy, say Marvelous, Scrumptious, and Delicious! If you follow these simple rules, you’re sure to be Literate Roleplaying in no time!

What not to do… Well, I’ll just list them in a list!
1. Don’t write if you’re rushed; write when you have a nice time to make a long post!
2. Don’t use short words, use longer ones!
3. If you’re stuck on a word, go find a synonym for it!
4. It helps to get spellchecker, but making a few mistakes aren’t bad, either!
5. Don’t let your friend hang there, make something that they can roleplay off of!
6. Just relax, if you make a short post every now and then, that’s fine!
7. Please, PLEASE don’t text talk, text talking is, “hey thre, whats up 2mrrw?” instead of doing that, do this: “Hey there, what’s going on tomorrow?”

Follow these rules, and if you read this, PM me the words, “Sugar Cookies” to me so I know you’re aware of these rules.

Good explanation of Literately RPing. Have PM'd you as you've seen.

And just another tip to add on (I find this useful myself.) Use a thesaurus or dictionary to get a multitude of words in your mind - it always helps to have different options to choose from so if you don't think one word fits, you can try another. (:

Awesome job here Wink

Can I just state that you should never think metaphors too cheesy. It seriously helps in being descriptive and painting the picture in the reader's head.
